Center 1968 is dedicated to shaping the future of political leadership in the state of Pennsylvania by fostering education, advocacy, and policy innovation. With a strong focus on uplifting Black women,   who are the backbone of American politics, we aim to ensure that marginalized voices are represented and empowered in decision-making spaces.

Mission Statement

Center 1968’s mission is to train, empower, and support Black women in political and civic spaces, ensuring they have the tools, networks, and confidence to lead change in their communities and beyond. Through education, mentorship, and advocacy, we are building a more inclusive and representative political landscape for future generations.

Vision Statement

We envision a future where Black women lead as elected officials, policymakers, advocates, and community builders, driving equitable solutions and shaping policy that impacts every level of government. Center 1968 strives to become the premier space for Black women to build skills, cultivate networks, and step into leadership roles that uplift and transform society.

BARBARA JORDAN FELLOWSHIP

The Barbara Jordan Fellowship is a prestigious program at Center 1968, designed to cultivate the next generation of political leaders with a special focus on empowering Black women. Named after the trailblazing politician and civil rights leader, Barbara Jordan, this fellowship honors her legacy by supporting individuals who are passionate about social justice, advocacy, and political reform.

She Can Win Training Program

This training initiative empowers Black women to run for office or step into campaign leadership roles. Through tailored workshops, mentorship, and strategic planning sessions, She Can Win provides Black women with the tactical skills needed to navigate and succeed in political campaigns. Whether as candidates or behind-the-scenes campaign managers, participants emerge ready to lead and influence.

The Folding Chair

In the spirit of Shirley Chisholm’s famous words, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair,” this program amplifies the voices of Black women in government and policy-making. Through a dynamic publication and event series, The Folding Chair informs, engages, and inspires Black women to take their rightful place at decision-making tables, creating pathways for meaningful involvement in civic life.

The Ella Baker Briefing

The Ella Baker Briefing is a dynamic initiative by Center 1968 designed to make complex legislative policies accessible and relevant to Black women. Through social media campaigns, engaging content, and clear policy breakdowns, this guide highlights key legislation and government actions that directly impact Black women and their communities. The Ella Baker Brief empowers its audience with knowledge, helping them to navigate and influence the political landscape. By demystifying policy, it enables Black women to engage confidently in civic discussions and drive positive change.
